Who We Are

 

Meg Stokes, Co-Chair

Meg is honoured to be the first Co-Chair of the MSH Leaders, assisting the Markham Stouffville Hospital Foundation with their fund raising efforts.   Born and raised in Markham, Meg is now raising her young family in Markham and is thankful to the hospital and staff for their exceptional service and care that they have provided to her family and her community, over the past two decades.

She is an active member of the community, President of the Angus Glen Ratepayers Association and a volunteer/advisor for countless groups and organizations including Markham International Sports Training Academy, Town Little Children’s Non-Profit Daycare, and the York Region Parents Group. 

A former Marketing executive and Director of Strategic Operations for companies including the Toronto Blue Jays, Rogers, GM, and Coca-Cola, Meg is currently managing her family’s boutique travel agency as well as consulting on sports and cause marketing partnerships. 

 

David Amadori, Co-Chair

David Amadori has been a part of the Markham Stouffville Community for over 20 years. Through the years he has been a regular visitor/patient of the hospital and its facilities. He is aware of how important the massive redevelopment is to the ever-growing Markham-Stouffville-Uxbridge Community and is very pleased to be a Co-chair and part of the MSH Leaders group.

David also volunteers his time with the St. Andrews College Alumni Association and he is an active member of the McGill Alumni Association chapter in Toronto. He has also been involved in philanthropic efforts supporting groups such as The United Way, The Heart and Stroke Foundation, Stop the Violence and the Toronto Police Widow and Orphans fund.

Currently, David works for a large insurance brokerage where he manages a number of commercial accounts.

 

Salmaan Alvi

Salmaan has over 10 years experience in providing business advice to entrepreneurial-minded organizations, as well as not-for-profit organizations and public companies.  Salmaan is also certified by the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA) as an In-Depth Tax Specialist, and provides income tax advice for owner managed businesses and individuals. His experience includes involvement in corporate and partnership reorganizations, tax aspects of sale and purchase of businesses, business succession, estate planning and personal and corporate tax planning.  Areas of expertise include the manufacturing, distribution and real estate sectors.

Aside from working with the MSH Leaders, Salmaan volunteers his time with the International Development and Relief Foundation, The Canada India Education Council and the Children of Hope Canada.

 

Musharaf (Moe) Anwar

Moe Anwar has been in the Wealth Management business since 2004, he is currently a partner at C.A. Wealth Management of RBC Dominion Securities. Moe is an active member of the community. He works closely with the York Region community and the South Asian community, raising over $100,000 for the Markham Stouffville Hospital in 2009. He has been appointed to the York Region Police's ad-hoc committee for multiculturalism. He has also served as Director of the Eye Foundation of Canada. In 2010 Moe founded the Markham Retirement Council.

 

Mary Evelyn

Mary grew up playing competitive golf and graduated with  a  B.A. from York University and a MBA from the University of Toronto Rotman School of Business. Mary took over the full time duties of managing her father’s golf course ; formerly  the John Evelyn Golf Center (now Bushwood) in Markham  in 1993 . The family golf course was renamed Bushwood  Golf Club in 1995  after the movie Caddyshack! Mary is an active volunteer in the community, formerly serving as member of the Board of Directors for the National Golf Course Owners Association, Central Ontario Chapter from 1996-2005. In 2007 Mary co-chaired the Princess Margaret Hospital Fund Raising  Golf Tournament which was featured on the popular TV series Designer guys.

Mary and her family have been active in the Markham/ Stouffville Communithy for 40 years and are very grateful for the great medical treatment and caring approach of the Markham Stouffville Hospital and staff. 

 

Eddie Mariani

Owner and operator of Mariani’s Custom Clothiers has been a resident of Markham for 35 years as well as operating business on Unionville Main Street for 30 years. Has committed volunteer time as a director on The Varley McKay Art Foundation and The Unionville BIA.

 

 

 

 

Joely McEwen

Joely McEwen has been a Markham resident for 34 of her 36 years- she has seen a lot of changes and is so pleased to be a part of the MSH Leaders. Joely has worked in television and entertainment marketing with several companies in the past including The Toronto International Film Festival, The Weather Network and The Canadian Stage Company.

 

 

 

Joane Mui

Joane grew up in Montreal and has moved to Toronto in 2002, when she joined the Markham neighborhood. She holds an accounting specialist B.B.A. from the University of Toronto and is a Chartered Accountant. Joane has been working in the public accounting practice since 2006, and is currently a senior audit manager at KPMG Enterprise, specializing in working with not-for-profit organizations and private companies. She works very closely with many not-for-profit organizations and volunteers at various activities held by not-for-profit organizations and fundraising events year-round, as well as committing her time to volunteer in a financial reporting role for Ascend Canada, a non-profit organization dedicated to network Pan-Asians in the community. 

 

Astrid Schyvenaars

Of Dutch descent, Astrid came to Canada in 1986. She traveled and lived in many places finally settling in the Markham Stouffville area.

Married with two boys who are actively involved with community hockey and soccer, she spends a great deal of her time with various fundraising initiatives. She is employed at the Hilton Suites Toronto/Markham Conference Centre & Spa as an Assistant Director of Catering & Conference Services.

Working in Markham and organizing many events for the Hospital and the community, she  enjoys working with MSH Leaders to make a difference and  be involved with the growth of the Markham Stouffville Hospital because its services have helped her in numerous ways already. It is important to Astrid to be involved with an effort to further support the expansion of a Hospital that serves a population which is continuously growing.

 

Amy ter Haar

Amy is a lawyer in Toronto, Ontario, practicing in the area of business law.  She received her law degree at the University of Western Ontario (UWO) in 2004 and was called the Ontario Bar in 2005.  She is currently pursuing a Masters of Law degree at UWO with a focus on the legal profession.   In addition to running her practice, Amy is a co-founding member of the Personal Data Protection Initiative, and lecturer for the International Institute of Mobile Technologies.  Visit her website: www.terhaar.ca, or follow her on twitter: @amyterhaar

 

Debbie Smrz

Moving to Markham when she was 12, Debbie is pleased to be giving back to the community by assisting in the Markham Stouffville Hospital Foundation with fundraising. With 2 young children of her own, Debbie understands the peace of mind knowing we have a top notch hospital at our doorstep when needs arise, and the importance of keeping it that way.   After spending some time travelling, Debbie went back to school to become a Naturopathic Doctor, graduating in 2007, and has recently opened a Naturopathic clinic, Naturopathic Living with her business partner on Unionville Main Street and is thrilled with the community response. As well running her practice and volunteering with MSH Leaders, Debbie teaches at the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition, is a fitness instructor at Goodlife, and gives motivational health seminars throughout the community.
